Opportunities to create, to invent, to design and to make abound at Exeter Cathedral School. Our Art & Design department is housed in part of the Old Deanery, leading on to our outdoor classroom in the Deanery garden. Pupils are welcomed into a haven full of materials and resources, where they are encouraged to explore and develop their creative talents, both independently and through group work. Children are given freedom to make individual choices and nurture their skills and techniques to an exceptionally high standard.
All pupils from Years 1 to 8 receive an Art & Design lesson each week in this light and inspiring space. After-school clubs are offered to those children interested in developing their talents and passions further.
Senior Enrichment Programme
In addition, the Art strand of our weekly Senior Enrichment Programme allows those with a love of visual arts to further immerse themselves in the creative world under the tuition of our Head of Art & Design. This also provides time for those pursuing scholarship ambitions to work on their portfolios to submit to their chosen senior school.
Art Scholarships
In 2022, seven pupils applied for Art awards to a variety of schools and all seven were successful. Pupils have been awarded scholarships to many senior schools including: Wellington School, Blundell’s School, Marlborough College, The Maynard School, King’s College, Queen’s College and Stover School.
The Good Schools Guide review stated: ‘Every inch of wall and ceiling space dedicated to works of art, a room full of colour and fun that was mirrored in the art teacher herself.’
ISI Inspection May 2019 report stated: ‘The quality of pupils’ art and design projects is a real strength: their work is proudly displayed throughout the School.’
