Notes from Badminton School:
Exeter Cathedral School’s “Orla Kiely meets William Morris” project explores the pattern designs of Arts & Crafts movement designer William Morris for background, and the crockery designs of Orla Kiely for the still life objects. The juxtaposition of the intricate patterns from the 19th Century, alongside the boldness of more contemporary pattern design offers great contrast. Contrast is such a key element in Art, and it is great to see it being explored in Exeter Cathedral School’s project.
Commended: Benji (Y6)
The delicate and subtle application of painted colour in Benji’s piece is delightful. Exploring the complementary pairing of blue and orange is so effective. The looser application of paint on the Kiely pattern in the background contrasts with the tight, accurate detail on the cup. The care with which he has painted the pattern on the cup is commendable, he has displayed excellent brush control.
Highly Commended: Hinemoa (Y6)
There is sensitivity, maturity and confidence in Hine’s submission in terms of her drawing technique, which brings an energy and life to her depiction of William Morris’ pattern. Also mature is her subtle and muted colour palette. The shifting perspectives on the ellipses of the mug and mustard pot resonate so well with Mary Fedden’s signature style.
